About
Max Strang grew up in Winter Haven in a house that Sarasota School architect Gene Leedy designed for his parents. He studied at the University of Florida and Columbia University and worked at SHoP Architects and Zaha Hadid Architects before he founded STRANG in 1998.
Strang calls his approach environmental modernism. He adapts the ideas of the Sarasota School to Florida's sun and rising water, and he favors local stone such as Florida Keystone. His office designed the Rock House in Coconut Grove. His team restored the Gene Leedy House, and AIA Florida gave that restoration a 2022 Award of Excellence for historic preservation.
AIA Florida named STRANG its 2025 Firm of the Year. The AIA elevated Strang to its College of Fellows in 2016, and AIA Florida gave him its Medal of Honor for Design in 2019. If you want a modern house that handles heat and storms with local materials, this studio has spent more than 25 years on that problem.
