About
Allan Shulman founded Shulman + Associates in 1996 as an extension of his research into modernism and tropical architecture. He teaches as a professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture, and his books include Miami Modern Metropolis and Building Bacardi.
His Design District firm pairs historic preservation with new buildings. In Miami Beach's Collins Park, the team designed the Anamar, an artist workforce housing project, and the Collins Park Garage with its perforated aluminum facade. Shulman's team won a 2025 AIA Miami Merit Award for the Miami Beach Botanical Garden master plan.
The firm has won 90 design awards under Shulman's leadership. The AIA made him a Fellow in 2008, and AIA Florida awarded him its Gold Medal in 2017. AIA Miami gave him its Silver Medal for Design in 2010. He co-wrote Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide, a handy companion for a walk through Miami Beach. If you own a midcentury building in Miami Beach, you'll work with an architect who has written books on the city's midcentury architecture.
