About
Rene Gonzalez runs Rene Gonzalez Architects in Miami, and he shapes each design around its site and South Florida's rising seas. His office takes on residential and cultural work.
Gonzalez wrapped the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in more than a million glass mosaic tiles. On Prairie Avenue in Miami Beach, he designed an elevated house to handle sea-level rise, and in 2023 the Mexican publisher Arquine released a bilingual book about that house.
AIA Miami named his office its 2011 Firm of the Year and gave him the 2012 H. Samuel Kruse Silver Medal for Design. Gonzalez has won two national AIA Honor Awards, and The Monacelli Press released a monograph on his office in 2018. Gonzalez has taught at UCLA and the University of Miami, among other schools. If you want a house that can stand up to flooding and feel open to its garden, study the Prairie Avenue residence before you meet him.
