Anthropic Usage by Country: 2026 Report

This report compiles publicly available datasets from Anthropic's Economic Index reports, Similarweb web traffic analytics, and AppMagic mobile download records to document Anthropic (Claude) usage by country across the period August 2025 through February 2026. The dataset spans 150+ countries and covers per-capita usage intensity, web traffic distribution, and mobile download share by geography. To measure adoption concentration relative to population size, Anthropic developed the AI Usage Index (AUI), which divides a country's share of global Claude conversations by its share of the global working-age population (ages 15–64). A score of 1.0 indicates usage proportional to population; a score of 4.0 means a country uses Claude four times more than its population share alone would predict. The tables below present the data.

Anthropic AI Usage Index (AUI) by Country

The Anthropic AI Usage Index highlights a consistent pattern: high-income nations with strong digital infrastructure are significantly over-represented in Claude usage, while middle- and low-income economies cluster below a 1.0 score. The table below presents AUI scores from Anthropic's August 2025 Economic Index report, which analyzed one million Claude.ai conversations collected between August 4–11, 2025.

Estimated monthly visits were calculated by multiplying Similarweb's reported total monthly visits to claude.ai by each country's published traffic share. These figures are estimates derived from publicly available Similarweb data.

Reference benchmarks: Estimated monthly visits reflect absolute traffic volume, not per-capita intensity. For a per-capita view, see the Anthropic AI Usage Index (AUI) in Table 2.

Key Insights:

  • The United States accounts for an estimated 231.7 million monthly visits to Claude.ai, making it the largest single market by raw traffic volume. This is consistent with the U.S. holding the largest share of English-language knowledge workers and enterprise AI adoption globally.

  • India ranks second with an estimated 97.3 million monthly visits despite a low per-capita AUI score, because its large working-age population generates significant absolute volume even at modest adoption rates. Anthropic's Economic Index data indicates that coding and software development account for a disproportionately large share of Claude use in India relative to the global average.

  • The United Kingdom, France, and Indonesia each generate an estimated 33–43 million monthly visits, representing meaningful adoption outside the two dominant markets. France and the UK reflect strong uptake in Western Europe, while Indonesia's 33.1 million estimated visits signal growing engagement across Southeast Asia.

Key Factors Associated with Higher Claude Adoption

While country rankings show where Claude adoption is strongest, they do not explain why some markets consistently outperform others. Anthropic's Economic Index identifies several structural characteristics that appear to be associated with higher AI adoption, including income level, workforce composition, English-language proficiency, and the prevalence of knowledge-intensive industries. The table below summarizes these patterns based on the countries highlighted throughout the report.

Key Factors Associated with Higher Claude Adoption(2025)

Factors Influencing Relative Claude Adoption
Siana
Factor Markets with Higher
Relative Claude Adoption
Markets with Lower
Relative Claude Adoption
Income Level High-income economies Middle- and low-income economies
Knowledge Workforce Large technology, finance, research, and professional services sectors Smaller knowledge-work sectors
English Proficiency Generally higher English-language fluency More localized language ecosystems
Primary Claude Usage Diverse professional tasks across writing, analysis, coding, and research More concentrated in coding and software development
AI Access Greater access to premium AI subscriptions and enterprise adoption More limited access to paid AI tools
Typical AUI Performance Frequently above the 1.0 global baseline Frequently below the 1.0 global baseline

Source: Anthropic Economic Index Reports (September 2025, January 2026, and March 2026).

Key Insights

  • Economic development appears to be one of the strongest predictors of Claude adoption. High-income countries consistently record AI Usage Index scores above the global baseline, while middle- and low-income economies are generally underrepresented relative to their working-age populations.

  • Knowledge-intensive industries drive broader AI adoption. Markets with large technology, finance, research, and professional services sectors tend to use Claude across a wider range of tasks, whereas lower-AUI countries show heavier concentration in coding-related workflows.

  • Access and workforce characteristics likely matter more than population size. Countries with smaller populations but advanced digital economies often achieve much higher per-capita usage than larger markets, suggesting that workforce composition and AI accessibility play a greater role in adoption than population alone.

Claude.ai Web Traffic by Country

Raw traffic volume tells a different story from the AUI. Because the AUI is a per-capita ratio, large-population countries can rank low within it despite contributing substantial absolute traffic. The table below shows each country's share of total global desktop traffic to Claude.ai in May 2026, based on Similarweb data. Claude.ai ranked #39 globally and #3 in the U.S. AI chatbot category during this period.

5 Indonesia 3.33% +28.76%
6–150+ All Other Countries 53.26% N/A

Source: Similarweb, May 2026.

Key Insights:

  • The United States accounts for roughly one in four visits to Claude.ai, suggesting that knowledge workers in the U.S. are disproportionately driving overall platform traffic relative to their share of the global internet population.

  • India ranks second in raw traffic (9.94%) despite one of the lowest AUI scores (0.27x), because India's massive working-age population generates large absolute volume even at low per-capita adoption. Its month-over-month growth of 24.28% suggests continued adoption growth.

  • Indonesia's presence in the top 5 by traffic share (3.33%), alongside a 28.76% month-over-month growth rate, is consistent with growing adoption of Claude across the market, even as per-capita engagement still lags behind wealthier economies.

Claude App Downloads by Country

Mobile download share provides an additional lens on Anthropic usage by country. Download figures capture consumer interest and first-contact adoption rather than sustained engagement, making them a useful indicator for markets where Claude's web presence is still developing. The Claude app surpassed 20 million total downloads since launch.

5 South Korea 3% High per-capita AUI country
5 United Kingdom 3% Third-largest English-language market

Source: AppMagic via Business of Apps, 2025. Total app downloads since launch: 20 million+.

Key Insights:

  • France's 10% download share (second only to the United States) stands out given that France accounts for only 3.52% of Claude.ai web traffic. This gap may indicate relatively stronger mobile adoption compared with its share of web traffic.

  • Japan and South Korea each capture 3% of downloads despite having relatively smaller English-dominant digital workforces, pointing to active developer and enterprise interest across the Asia-Pacific region. South Korea's 3.73x AUI score (August 2025) is consistent with per-capita engagement that extends beyond app installs alone.

  • The U.S. and France together account for 39% of all global app downloads, yet the two countries appear to differ in usage mode: the U.S. is predominantly a web-and-API user base, while France's download concentration relative to its web traffic share suggests stronger mobile adoption.

AI adoption trends are increasingly influencing how digital-native audiences discover information, learn, and make decisions. The geographic concentration documented here, weighted heavily toward high-income, knowledge-intensive economies, indicates that AI tools like Claude are becoming increasingly integrated into information-seeking and professional workflows across many knowledge-intensive industries.

Understanding where adoption is accelerating helps marketers and researchers anticipate how digital behavior may evolve across different demographics and geographies. Younger, digitally connected populations have consistently been among the earliest adopters of AI tools, making these trends relevant for brands seeking to understand how future consumer behavior may evolve.
