About

Mimi Maddock McMakin, a Palm Beach native, founded Kemble Interiors in 1982. Her daughter, Celerie Kemble, is her partner and leads the firm's New York office. McMakin has spent more than 40 years decorating and restoring estates and clubs by architects such as Addison Mizner and John Volk, and she mixes humor into careful restoration.

Celerie Kemble graduated from Harvard and worked in film production before she turned to decorating. She has spent two decades building a portfolio as varied as her clients. The pair favor strong color and wit, and their hospitality work includes design at The Colony Palm Beach.

Architectural Digest has put the firm on its AD100, and LUXE Interiors + Design lists it on its Gold List. Elle Decor added the firm to its A-List. Cece Bowman, another designer on this list, spent 13 years at Kemble before she opened her own firm. If you want color and a sense of humor in a historic house, start with this mother-and-daughter team.
